DIY Belly Dance Ornaments

DIY Belly Dance Ornaments

Following last week’s DIY dance space decor project, I have another DIY idea to share with you! 😀

This project was inspired by these pretty snowflake ballerinas, and I wanted to make a belly dancer version that can be used all year around.

So in this video, you will see how to make 3 versions of paper belly dancer ornaments. It’s easy to make, and great for decorating your dance space. Let’s get started!

To make these ornaments, you need:

Belly Dance Ornaments Material

Dancer templates – you can click here to get your free templates.

Table napkin or paper doilies – I got mine from a dollar store

Scissors

Glue

String – I am using white fishing line here.

How to Make Belly Dance Ornaments

First, if you are a Sparkly Belly subscriber, print out the free templates from here. If you are not a subscriber yet, you can quickly sign up from this link and get yours for free. 🙂

Cut just inside the grey line. I realized I wasted so much blank space on these papers, so I fixed the templates after I filmed the video, and the version you will download has all 3 dancers on the same page.

Next we’ll do a little origami. Take a napkin, fold it so the folded edges line up, and fold it again in the same direction. Then cut from here, the shortest edge towards the other side in a nice curve. And snip about 1cm or 1/2in from the tip. Unfold it, and it should look like a circle skirt.

Slip your belly dancer into the circle skirt, and fold the top randomly like pleats to make a nice skirt shape. And just glue it onto the dancer. I like to put glue on the dancer’s waist area, then gently place the edge of the skirt.

You can make the skirt with a paper doily as well. If you use a paper doily, just fold it the same way, but just press the centre to keep the flowy shape of the skirt. Cut the tip off, and that’s all you need to do since it’s already a nice circle.

Then slip the skirt on the dancer, and if the hole is too small, snip a small line on either side like this. Then fold the sides inward to make the skirt nice and flowy looking.

Then, I took the circle piece of the napkin that I cut earlier to make the bra top. I cut it in half circles, and fold both like this. Then I just put glue on the dancer, place one piece like this, and place another one like this. Then flip and glue on the rest.

Another option for the bra top is to use the design of the doilies. I just cut out this rose design from an extra doily, and wrapped it around the dancer to make her bra top.

Now we attach string to the dancers. For the dancer with her arms up, place the string around her hands and tie a knot. For the sword dancer, tie your string around the centre of her sword. And lastly for the dancer with her arms down, poke a hole at the top of her head. I used a pin gently to make a hole, and tied the string here.

And that’s it! I have attached some flowers on the strings to make the ornaments look more fun. These belly dancer ornaments are light weight, so you can hang them from the ceiling or window frame, and they sway beautifully and decorate your dance space.

Hope you liked this DIY project, and if you make your own, please share a photo of your creation on Sparkly Belly’s Facebook page.
