How to Make “Naked” Costumes

How to make naked costumes cutouts

I’m not a big fan of belly dance costumes that are any more naked than they already are, but sometimes that “naked” design details on costumes can be visually interesting and also create beautiful lines.

And when I say “naked”, I mean those cut outs that show your skin or details that mimic the colour of your skin. These details might make your costumes more fun, sexier, or lighter looking. 😉

But you don’t always want to be more naked than you already are. So in this video, I’ll share with you different options of creating those “naked” details.

Learn how to make these skirts here! 😀

How to Make “Naked” Costumes

Naked #1 – Use mesh. In the naked section, add a mesh insert. Mesh offers nice coverage that is translucent. For dance costumes, I highly recommend a type of mesh called powermesh. Powermesh has an amazing stretch and recovers really well. It comes in different colours including nude.

Naked #2 – Use nude colour fabric. If your naked section is in the area where your undergarment may show through, mesh may not be a good option. If that’s the case, try nude colour fabric. If you want to create a really naked look, try to find the shade of nude fabric that matches your skin, but even if it’s not a complete match, it still creates the lighter feel for your costume.

Naked #3 – Use lace. I LOVE lace, and adding a lace insert into the naked section of your costume creates a beautiful, refined naked look.

All of these options can also be decorated on top, which also creates gorgeous details that look like floating on your skin. You can layer different options like lace over nude fabric.

Naked #4 – Embrace the emptiness. If your cutouts are small or in areas you’re comfortable showing like parts of legs, leaving the naked section naked is an option. I do recommend reinforcing the edges with interfacing so the cutouts don’t enlarge any more than you’d like though!
