Best Sewing Machine for Beginner Costume Makers (2026)

Best Sewing Machine with Mao holding her favorite one

Before you spend $500 on a sewing machine… keep reading!

Many dancers ask me this: “Which sewing machine should I buy?”

It’s a really good question — because as costume makers, we deal with all kinds of fabrics… lycra, sequins, chiffon — all those slippery or stretchy ones that make sewing both magical and a little intimidating.

So today, I’ll share my top 3 things to think about when choosing a sewing machine for belly dance costume making — including what I personally use and love.

And at the end, I’ll tell you the most important thing about sewing machines that I wish I had known when I started. Let’s get started!

1. What To Look For in a Beginner Sewing Machine

I bought my first sewing machine about 15 years ago.

It was a Brother sewing machine under $100 — super simple, nothing fancy.

But you know what? It worked beautifully for my first costumes.

If you go for something like that, just make sure of a few things:

1. It can do straight and zigzag stitches — that’s really all you need for most costume projects.

2. It’s not a handheld sewing machine — those little ones can’t handle stretch or thick fabrics.

Handheld sewing machines will not work on most dance fabrics

3. You can easily change needles and thread the machine.

If you’re shopping online, check reviews to see if people find it easy to use — that’ll give you a sense of whether it’s a good starter option.

Also, for your first sewing machine, go for a reputable brand like Singer, Brother, Janome, etc.

A modern sewing machine like this should be totally fine for sewing most dancewear fabrics. You don’t need something fancy or expensive to make beautiful costumes!

2. My Current Sewing Machine

Now, I eventually upgraded — and I’ve been using this one for years (affiliate): the Singer Quantum Stylist 9960.

And I adore it!

The biggest difference between this and my first machine is how quietly and smoothly it sews!

Here are my favorite things about it:

1. It runs so smoothly — perfect for delicate fabrics like chiffon or satin.

2. It comes with a whole range of presser feet — I especially love the narrow hem foot and the walking foot, which are amazing for tricky fabrics.

3. It has an extension table — super helpful when sewing long skirts or veils.

4. It’s also easy to thread, and has a ton of fun decorative stitch options if you like adding creative touches.

I’ve had mine for about 8 years, and it’s still going strong!

The only time it stopped working was a couple of years ago — and it turned out to be my fault. There was too much lint collected in the bobbin case!

Luckily, this whole area comes off easily, so I was able to clean it, and it’s been perfect ever since.

Clean your bobbin case to keep your machine working well.

With the right sewing needles, this machine can handle pretty much any fabric — from Lycra to chiffon to sequin fabric.

I truly love it so much that I even brought it with me when I moved from Canada to Japan!

So if you want something durable, versatile, and long-lasting, I highly recommend this one. Lots of great reviews on Amazon too (affiliate): Singer Quantum Stylist 9960

Now, I can only speak from my own experience, but here’s something that might surprise you:

Which sewing machine you choose is important…but what’s even more important is the needle you use.

3. The Most Important Things – Needles!!

When I was new to sewing, I used to get so frustrated because my machine would skip stitches on stretch fabric.

A machine that skips stitches on stretch fabric is a needle problem.

I thought something was wrong with my machine!

But it wasn’t the machine’s fault — I was using the wrong needle.

So here are 3 types of needles I always keep on hand:

1. For stretch fabrics like Lycra or spandex — use a stretch needle, size 75/11.

For lycra and spandex fabrics use stretch needle 75/11

2. For lightweight fabrics like chiffon or satin — use a universal needle, size 65/9.

3. And I always have universal needles in size 75/11 — I use these for most other projects.

The best universal needle is the universal 75/11.

With these three types, you can sew nearly any belly dance costume fabric smoothly and neatly.

These 3 types of needles are the best to make your machine the n=best sewing machine.

So remember — you don’t need a fancy sewing machine to make beautiful costumes!

Start with something simple that has the basic stitches, and upgrade only when you’re ready.

And most importantly, pair it with the right needle for your fabric — that’s the real secret to smooth, frustration-free sewing.
