Need some DIY holiday gift ideas for your dance friends — or maybe a little treat for yourself?
Today I’ve got 12 easy DIY projects that look amazing, and most of them take less than an hour to make! You’ll be surprised how simple they are.
Each one is beginner-friendly, and I’ve linked a step-by-step tutorial for every project at the end of each section, so you can start making your favorites right away. Let’s get started!
1. Zill Mufflers and Pouch
The sound of zills is enough to get me excited and ready to dance — but sometimes, they’re a little too loud, especially at night!
These zill mufflers let you practice quietly while keeping that nice feel of playing. Plus, you can make a cute matching pouch to carry them in!

You can size them perfectly to your zills, and it’s a wonderful way to use up that pretty scrap fabric you just can’t throw away.

And I love adding tiny sparkly beads on the elastic to mark each zill — such a small detail, but so fun.

2. Lace Overskirt
This one’s super easy — just a little stretch lace, and you’ll have a stylish, flowy overskirt that fits many sizes.
It has a fun asymmetrical design and side ruffles that move beautifully when you dance.

You can make one for yourself and matching ones for your friends or troupe members — perfect for layering over practice wear or leggings.

Check out this tutorial here if you want to give it a try!
3. Sparkly Bracelet

This bracelet looks fancy and expensive — you often see this style for $30 or more — but it’s surprisingly easy to make.
There’s a free pattern you can download in the tutorial, and once you have the base ready, you can decorate it with rhinestones, beads, or sequins in your favorite colors.

You can even batch-make the bases and design each one differently — that makes it such a great gift idea!

It’s beautiful, customizable, and instantly elevates any outfit. See the full tutorial here.
4. Long Ruched Hip Scarf
As belly dancers, we can never have too many hip scarves!
This one’s extra long, so it feels almost like a half-skirt. It drapes beautifully and makes your movements look extra fluid.

The ruching adds texture and shape, and it’s surprisingly simple to sew — perfect for beginners.

It’s also great for matching troupe pieces, so your group can have a cohesive look that still feels custom-made.
Check out the tutorial here for step-by-step instructions.
5. Detachable Puff Sleeves
These sleeves are inspired by classic Golden Era dancers — they instantly give you that timeless, romantic look.

They’re detachable, so you can transform your outfit in minutes. Pair them with skirts or bras in matching colors to create a professional, cohesive troupe look.

In the tutorial, I share a neat little trick to keep the sleeves up on your arms, so definitely check it out here. It’s one of my favorite quick projects that makes a big impact!
6. Fringe Hip Scarf

This one’s a total crowd-pleaser — it’s super easy, fast, and fun to personalize.
No pattern needed: just cut a triangle, add ribbon and fringe, and you’re done!

Mix and match prints and fringe colors, and you can make a dozen adorable hip scarves in one afternoon.

They’re great for practice, layering, or as small gifts for your dance sisters.

7. Lace Shrug
This lace shrug adds both comfort and elegance. The extra-long sleeves with thumbholes are not only cute but also make your arms look longer — it’s a small detail that changes your outfit beautifully.

You can make it in stretch lace for a soft, romantic look, or in opaque lycra or stretch velvet for something warmer and more dramatic.

It adds a professional touch to any practice outfit. The tutorial link is here.
8. Lace Belt
This project might be the easiest way to elevate your costume!

You basically create a strap, sew on lace appliqués, glue on a backing — and you’re done.

It looks intricate but takes very little time, and since it’s adjustable, it works for multiple sizes — perfect for troupe costuming.

I love how a simple lace belt can completely change the feel of your outfit. Get all the details for this tutorial here.
9. Wrap Skirt

Speaking of adjustable — here’s another one you’ll love.
This high-waisted wrap skirt is perfect for layering over leggings or practice pants, and the high-low design gives it such a stylish look.

I actually made this when I was pregnant, but I’d wear it anytime!

It’s flattering, comfortable, and easy to make in your favorite stretch fabric.

Layer it over lace pants for an especially chic look — and you can find the full tutorial linked here.
10. Shrug with Ruffle Sleeves

This project is one of my all-time favorites!
It was inspired by ghawazee coats — the front opening lets you show off your beautiful bra, while the ruffled sleeves move so gracefully.

Many dancers tell me they want something that offers a little coverage for the upper arms or back without hiding their costume — and this shrug does exactly that.

It’s elegant, flattering, and instantly elevates your entire look. Start creating today with this tutorial!
11. Prop Bag

Now, how do you carry your swords, canes, or wings to shows without turning it into a workout?
This prop bag is the answer.

It’s sleek, sturdy, and even slips over a suitcase handle, so you can travel easily and in style.

Add a tassel for a cute finishing touch!

It’s a bit more time-consuming than the other projects, but totally worth it — especially for a dancer who travels or performs often.
Find the tutorial here for the full sewing guide.
12. Mermaid Skirt
Every belly dancer needs a beautiful, well-fitted mermaid skirt — and this one is both flattering and easy to make.

The pattern is customizable to your measurements, and once you have it, there are only three seams to sew!

The silhouette looks amazing on many body types, and it’s perfect for troupe costuming or solo performances.

It does take a bit more prep time, but the results are totally worth it.
