Princess Jasmine Sleeves DIY – Romantic Drape Sleeves

Princess Jasmine Sleeves DIY - romantic drape sleeves

I like Princess Jasmine.

Her typical look is not a floor length dress like other Disney princesses. She’s in rather simple harem pants, but she is still gorgeous and that’s what I find unique and attractive about her.

And to me, the best part of her outfit is the sleeves.

Her sleeves are so flowy, and simply romantic.
I’ve always wanted to re-create the look, and I think it’s perfect addition to a belly dance top if you want the romantic look or just hide your upper arm in a subtle way.

So continuing from last week, you’ll see how to make these romantic drape sleeves in the Summer Costume series. We’ll make them out of light chiffon, so the sleeves will look light and airy while giving you some coverage. Let’s get started!

To make these drape sleeves, you need:

Chiffon – ½ yd (1/2m) is plenty. You can use other lightweight fabric for this.

Matching colour thread

Regular sewing tools (see resources page for my recommended tools)

How to Make Princess Jasmine Sleeves

First, put on the costume bra you want to attach the sleeves to, and measure from the top of a cup to midway through the shoulder strap at the back.

I find attaching the sleeves here gives most range of motion for your arms. We measure over the shoulder, because we need to make sure the sleeves can come all the way up to the shoulders when we move our arms. If you make it exactly to the size of your arms, you won’t be able to lift your arms.

Measure for drape sleeves

Next, we’ll cut the fabric. Now here’s a secret to creating sleeves that drape nicely on your arms – cutting the fabric on the bias.

This means we cut the fabric at a 45 degree angle instead parallel to the edges of the fabric. So we measure and cut a rectangle that is 12in(30cm) wide. And the length is the measurement we took earlier plus 5in (12cm). Make 2 of these if you are creating symmetrical sleeves for both sides.

Fold the rectangle piece in half right sides together, and do a straight stitch along the long end.

Cutting fabric on the bias and sewing it is a bit more challenging, but you don’t have to stress out  about making everything perfectly aligned. Just take your time, and do your best, and everything will turn out okay. 🙂

Turn it inside out, and do a baste stitch along the short ends or in other words, do a long straight stitch.

Pull one of the thread at each end to create gathering. I gathered each end until it was about 2in (5cm) wide.

Sew the gathered sections in place with a straight stitch.

Next, add one end to the inside of the top of a bra cup, and the other end to the back side of the shoulder strap. If your strip is thin like mine, fold the end inside to create a cleaner edge and hide the raw edge. Hold the sleeve with pins or clips and try it on at this point to make sure you like the placement and you can still move your arms up and down. If not, try changing the angles. Then stitch it in place by hand.

And that’s it! It’s very simple, but these Princess Jasmine sleeves add a very romantic, feminine feel to your bra top. 😀

Remember to cut the fabric on the bias, and you’ll get the nice, flowy drape. It’s a great way to add light coverage for your upper arms and still look light and airy.
