10 DIY belly dance accessories

If you’re a belly dancer, your summer schedule is likely full of shows and rehearsals!

Have you decided on which costumes to wear yet? 😉

When it gets busy, you may plan to re-use a costume you have…which is fine!

But you can definitely jazz it up and give it a fresh look with accessories!

So here are 10 DIY belly dance accessories that are easy to make and will complete your summer costumes!

Best part is, you can probably make most of them with leftover fabric and supplies in your stash! 😉

Let’s get started!

10 DIY Belly Dance Accessories to Complete Your Summer Costume from Head to Toe!

#1. DIY Snake Arm Cuff

DIY Snake Arm Cuff Jewelry

This no-sew DIY is super beginner-friendly, yet there’s room for customization! Add rhinestones, beads, or try different shapes! A perfect summer jewelry to wear on or off stage 🙂

#2. DIY 10-minute Overskirt

DIY tribal overskirt hip skirt with side ruffles

This is definitely one of the most popular tutorials here on Sparkly Belly. It’s really simple to make, and you can choose not to sew at all!

I’ve seen many people make their own versions of this overskirt on Sparkly Belly’s Facebook group and it’s so cute when you use fabric with textures or printed patterns…. or layer a couple of them!

#3. DIY Drape Armband

DIY Drape Armband with Hourglass Belly Dance Dress

This one requires a bit of stitching for the armband part, but it’s also easy to make! If you have pieces of scrap fabric, simply layer them and let them drape…. and they will fly and look so pretty as you move around your arm!

If you have a circle skirt, definitely make an armband like this that matches your skirt! It’ll make your outfit appear cohesive, even if your bedlah is in a completely different color 🙂

#4. DIY Barefoot Sandals

DIY Barefoot Sandals with Beaded Lace Applique

If you’re interested in playing with beads and sequins, this is a perfect DIY project for you! You simply take a lace applique (sold in craft stores) and elastic, and sew on beads and sequins on the lace to add shine.

Lace is already pretty, so any beads and sequins you add to that will simply enhance the beauty 🙂 And it’ll make your pointed toe look pretty as well!!

#5. DIY Sparkly Hair Clip

DIY Sparkly Star Flower Dancer's Hair Clip

Many dancers forget about hair accessories….. but unless you’re performing a Khaleegy piece or your choreography requires you to toss your hair around, I highly recommend you add something shiny to your hair as well! It really completes the outfit! 🙂

This tutorial shows you how to turn any applique into a hair clip that stays!

#6. DIY Chain Belt

DIY Gold Chain Belt

Another no-sew project! And this DIY is perfect for recycling your old earrings or pendants. My version is pretty simple, but feel free to embellish it with beads and coins if you like!

It’s prefect for layering over a practice wear or performance costume… raqs sharki or tribal!

#7. DIY Gauntlets

DIY Belly Dance Gauntlets Fingerless Gloves

Gauntlets (or fingerless gloves) are a classic accessory for belly dance costumes! They really highlight your arm movements 🙂

Plus, if you feel too exposed in your costume, these gauntlets will come to the rescue. They will help balance out the skin to costume ratio!

#8. DIY Shrug

DIY Shrug for Dancers

This is another one of Sparkly Belly favorites! It’s like the gauntlets above, but if you want a bit more coverage around your upper arms and top of your back, this is a perfect solution!

If you don’t want to be completely covered, using mesh or lace is a great idea 😀

#9. DIY Sparkly Chunky Bangle

DIY Sparkly Chunky Bangle belly dance

Have you noticed this style of bangles are popular amongst belly dancers? This bangle is so chunky, which makes your wrist appear small and delicate, and the shine is visible from a distance!

Once you make it in a neutral color like beige, and sparkle it with lots of rhinestones, it’ll become your go-to bangle for all your costumes 🙂

#10. DIY Nude Elastic Straps

Nude Elastic Straps DIY for dance costumes

The last but not least, these nude elastic straps are really useful in making armbands and leg accessories like the one in the photo!

Because the straps are in nude color, they disappear into your skin and highlight the main sparkly motif! A great way to add shine without looking heavy 😀

So those are 10 DIY belly dance accessories for you to try! 🙂

I selected ones that are simple to make, and very sparkly (or can be made sparkly), so they will shine beautifully under the sun for outdoor performances!

And they will make YOU shine on stage! 🙂
