Too revealing? 3 ways to add coverage to your bra, belly and skirt – Your Sparkly Wardrobe Week 6

Add more coverage to bra, belly and skirt

Welcome back to Your Sparkly Wardrobe Project – Week 6!

Last week Mahin showed how we can make the most out of different skirt styles. I loved it! She gave lots of great posing and movement tips. If you missed it, catch the episode here.

And today, I’ll show you 3 ways to add coverage to costumes that you feel are too revealing. How you feel in your costume is very important and affects how you dance. So let’s make your costumes more comfortable! 😀

3 Ways to Add Coverage to Your Belly Dance Costumes

1. Magic straps

Add magic straps to make belly dance bra work

If you have a belly dance bra that’s a bit too big or if you’ve lost weight, you might have the gaping cup issue. My favourite way to fix that is these magic straps!

The Magic Straps are actually very simple, plain straps that you would make as a base for your bra shoulder straps. Simply take grosgrain ribbon as a base, and cover it with the fabric of your choice.

The key is how you place these straps. Try adding a magic strap or two at an angle from the tops of your bra cups. These straps help re-distribute the excess fabric and prevent gaping. And it provides more coverage, even though visually it’s not heavy. It’s like magic!

2. Belly stocking

If you are conscious about showing your belly, try this DIY belly stocking. Make it with a type of mesh called powermesh, which is often used for dance costumes, so it feels nice and snug and you can still show your belly movements.

You can see how to make this to your size step-by-step in this tutorial.

3. Modesty panel

Finally, if you’ve got a skirt with a bit too much opening, give a modesty panel a try. Make it out of lightweight fabric, and it’ll move graciously as you dance. I suggest adding the same fabric as decoration to your bra top, so the whole costume looks like it was designed that way from the beginning.

Here’s how you can make this modesty panel.

Hope these ideas help you freshen up some of your old costumes and feel comfortable dancing in them! If you try any of them, take before and after photos and share them on Sparkly Belly’s Facebook group. You’ll inspire other dancers to give it a try!

And next week, Week 7 of Your Sparkly Wardrobe Project, Mahin will show you how to store and pack costumes for traveling. It’s going to be awesome stuff, and make sure to sign up for Mahin’s newsletter so you won’t miss it!
