4 DIY Baladi Dresses to Make and Dance In!

4 DIY Baladi Dresses (Saidi dresses, Galabeya) to Make and Dance In

As soon as dancers walk on stage in fun belly dance baladi dresses, YOU KNOW it’s going to be a good show!

Is it a cool cane piece? Or a cheeky shaabi?

Whatever it is, you know you’ll be clapping your hands and beaming at the dancers in a few seconds. It’s going to be fun!

And that’s not it! There are so many reasons why those loose baladi dresses (or saidi dresses) are awesome:

  • They offer lots of coverage!
  • You can mix and match colors and patterns, and the outfit only gets better!
  • They are loose, so very forgiving even if your size changes!
  • Great for all ages!
  • Great for all belly dance levels!

Despite all the goodness these dresses offer, I feel these dresses are not used enough.

It’s probably because these dresses don’t come in many sizes at all and there aren’t as many design options.

But here’s good news – these dresses aren’t hard to make!

In fact, even if you’re relatively new to sewing costumes, you can make them.

So in this post, let me share with you 4 beautiful DIY baladi dresses you can try!

4 DIY Baladi Dresses to Try This Year

1. Keyhole neck baladi dress

This one is the most straightforward baladi dress to make, but it’s definitely not a boring design! Use the free pattern to create the cute keyhole neckline, and the dress has split sleeves.

A good, basic baladi dress, perfect for troupe costuming 🙂

2. Mandarin collar baladi dress

If you like the loose shirt look, try this mandarin collar baladi dress! The opening lets you showcase your bra top, and like the first dress, this one has split sleeves too.

It’s a great project if you want to try something a little more challenging!

3. One shoulder asymmetrical baladi dress

If you want a more unique and modern look, here is a loose baladi dress with a modern twist. The one-shoulder asymmetrical design and the drape sleeve make the costume look more sophisticated!

I also love the contrast between the loose, casual top and the clean, fitted bottom.

4. Cowl neck baladi dress with butterfly sleeves

Another design with a modern flare. The pattern for this dress was actually made by making some adjustments to the one shoulder dress you just saw 😉

But this one offers more coverage, especially around the torso and back, so it’s perfect if you want more coverage. You can make this with opaque fabric, or like I did here, you can use lace, which looks light and luxurious. The flowy butterfly sleeves add to the feminine feel of this dress!

As I re-read this post, I’m loving the colors and prints! Like I said earlier, the more colors or patterns you add, the better! 🙂

And the best part is, none of these dresses require advanced sewing skills. If you are new to sewing stretch fabric, check out this post with the best stretch fabric sewing tips and practice ahead of time, so your projects will go smoothly.
